When is Counseling Appropriate?

Being aware that therapeutic work may be necessary to address specific wounds, uncovering underlying mental health histories or trauma realities in the life of directees is important The process of discovering these needs is often a normal part of the spiritual direction relationship and is taken seriously. In my professional role, I am fully prepared to make a referral and help the directee make a transition into the therapeutic relationship, if need be. Confidentiality in spiritual direction is treated in the same formal and legal manner as any other form of counseling. If appropriate boundaries are maintained by those involved, spiritual direction and therapy can go on simultaneously and can be complementary aspects of a person’s inner work.
